Thermally conductive double-sided tape is a specialized tape composed of a thermally conductive substrate, thermally conductive fillers, and an adhesive layer; it offers both high thermal conductivity and strong adhesion. This material is specifically designed to bond heat-generating components-such as chips-to heat-dissipating components, like heat sinks.
Thermally conductive double-sided tapes can be categorized based on their substrate into two types: those with a substrate and those without. Substrate materials include tissue paper, PET, foam, non-woven fabric, and cloth. Based on adhesive composition, they can be classified into water-based acrylic, solvent-based acrylic, solvent-based rubber, hot-melt, and silicone types.
Double-sided tapes without a substrate are softer and conform better to surfaces, though the adhesive layer may experience edge bleed-out at high ambient temperatures. Tapes with a substrate consist of three parts: the substrate, the adhesive, and the release liner (or silicone-coated paper).
